MATT PITTMAN: Welcome to Feeding Northeast Florida. My name is Matt Pittman. Today I get to talk to Feeding Northeast Florida Dietetic Intern Alison Kucharski. Alison, thanks for talking to me today.
ALISON KUCHARSKI: Thanks, Matt. I’m happy to be here and grateful to have you here.
MATT: All right, so today we’re talking all about nutrition and how nutrition is so important here at Feeding Northeast Florida.
ALISON: Yeah, so nutrition is important to anyone and everyone on the planet. But really, what we do here is crucial to it as well. We work to provide lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to our partner agencies as well as their clients. Half of what we actually provide these agencies is produce. Those fresh fruits and vegetables are really, really rich in those minerals and vitamins that are crucial to making our bodies function properly and keeping us happy and healthy.
MATT: Now, there’s one really cool program that you utilize here at Feeding Northeast Florida and it’s called My Plate.
ALISON: Yeah. So, My Plate is actually the United States Department of Agriculture ... so, USDA ... it’s their tool. It provides recipes as well as so many other tools online. Check it out. It’s ChooseMyPlate.gov. This website actually provides more information about how much of each major food group we should be eating per day, depending on your age as well as your gender. It’s really interesting.
MATT: All right, let’s talk a little bit deeper and talk about how nutrition can really impact someone’s health.
ALISON: Yeah. So, that’s been something I’ve been focusing on during my time here as an intern at Feeding Northeast Florida. So, three of the topics I’ve been presenting on are cancer, diabetes and hypertension, which is also known as high blood pressure. All three of these can be impacted by your nutrition, and can also be managed and prevented by nutrition. So, for hypertension, for example, let’s say you’re using a lot of canned items in your pantry. Rinsing them out with water will lower the sodium content. It’s a great option to help out with hypertension diagnosis. As far as diabetes, focusing on those whole grains and making half of your grains whole grains is really great for helping you stay fuller longer and help keep your blood pressure steady throughout the day so it doesn’t spike or fall.
MATT: Now, there’s a lot of information out there. And if someone is watching right now, where can they go to get some more details and what can they do?
ALISON: Yeah, absolutely. So, like I mentioned before, ChooseMyPlate.gov is a great option for the My Plate website. On top of that, check out EatRight.org, which is the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website. Registered dietitians are a great source of information for nutrition info. And that website provides lots of articles and info as well.
